BR Participates In World Telecommunication Day

On the weekend of May19th - 20th, 2017 Botswana Railways (BR) participated in the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD) commemorations at Masunga. The WTISD is an annual event that is intended to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

Giving a keynote address at the WTISD commemoration, The Minister of Transport and Communication (MTC) Mr. Kitso Mokaila, had this to say “many lessons could be drawn from this day because it left a footprint in all the villages where the annual commemorations were hosted”.

He highlighted that this year’s theme “Big data, Big Impact” was fitting because telecommunications encompassed the everyday life of telephones, internet and other technologies. The minister said the invention of technology made life easy because one does not have to be with the other party physically in order to communicate.

As one of the parastatals under (MTC), Botswana Railways participated on this day activities.BR exhibition centered on Telecommunications and Signals, Blue Mark and Passenger Services. Director Operations and Engineering Mr. Justice Ramontsho shared with the public about the efforts of Botswana Railways to ensure Rail -Road safety. “As Botswana Railways our contact with motorist and the public is through the level crossings, which we have under close surveillance 24/7”. He further stated that as Botswana Railways they have established systems called Safe Working Systems by which is intended to minimize delays in operations and reduce accidents’ risks on the mainline because it is through the system that they are able to closely monitor the level crossings.

As a gesture towards bridging digital divide and supporting the Ministerial initiative, BR donated 5 computers to different schools in Masunga.Also in attendance was Botswana Railways Acting CEO Mr. Stephen also graced the occasion.

Other Organizations who were participating included but not limited to BUIST, Mascom Wireless, Orange, Botho College, Botswana Post, Bofinet and Botswana Telecommunications
