34 PETROLEUM TANKERS BACK ON TRACK, BOOSTING BOTSWANA’S FREIGHT CAPACITY
Botswana Railways, in partnership with African Rail Company (ARC), has successfully completed the overhaul of 34 petroleum tankers that had been out of service since 2018. The return of these tankers to operation marks an important step in strengthening Botswana Railways’ freight capacity and supporting more reliable transportation of petroleum products by rail. Each tanker has a capacity of 55,000 litres, meaning a single train load can transport up to 1.87 million litres of petroleum products. This increased rail capacity provides an efficient alternative for bulk transportation, while helping to reduce pressure and congestion on the country’s road network. The refurbishment forms part of ongoing efforts to improve asset utilisation, enhance operational reliability and strengthen the role of rail in the movement of essential commodities. By restoring previously idle assets to service, Botswana Railways continues to build capacity that contributes to the security, reliability and efficiency of petroleum supply. As Botswana Railways advances its transformation and revitalisation agenda, initiatives such as this demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to making better use of existing assets while delivering sustainable freight solutions for the country and the wider region.Moving Botswana forward, one rail journey at a time.
