BOTSWANA RAILWAYS AND MAATLA RESOURCES EXPLORE COAL LOGISTICS COLLABORATION

 Botswana Railways Management, led by Caretaker General Manager Mr. Okitanye Gaogane, recently met with executives from Maatla Resources to explore opportunities for collaboration on a rail-based logistics solution for the evacuation of coal. The discussions focused on facilitating the movement of coal from the mine through the Mmamabula rail siding, with rail transport providing a link to markets in South Africa and beyond. The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to identify practical and efficient logistics solutions that can support the movement of increased coal volumes by rail. Botswana Railways reaffirmed its commitment to working with industry partners to facilitate reliable and efficient freight services. Strengthening rail-based coal transportation has the potential to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce reliance on road transportation and enhance the competitiveness of Botswana’s mineral exports. The collaboration also supports Botswana Railways’ broader transformation and growth agenda by increasing freight volumes, maximising the use of rail infrastructure and positioning the railway as a key enabler of regional trade, economic development and sustainable logistics.
